Questions
What makes a gift last a lifetime?
Honest materials such as solid wood, wool, linen, clay and glass, construction that can be repaired rather than replaced, and a maker who stands behind the work. Everything on this page is made by hand in Britain by the person named on it.
What is a good lifetime gift for a man?
Something he will use every day: an oak swill basket for logs, a solid wood box for his watch and cufflinks, or a wooden ring made to his size. A painting of a place he knows is another good choice.
What is a good lifetime gift for a woman?
A hand-quilted bed quilt, a stained glass panel for a window, or a hand-embroidered brooch. These are the kinds of pieces that are traditionally handed down.
Can I have something made specially?
Yes. Many of our makers take commissions, from a painting of a particular view to a ring made to size. See Commissions to send a maker your idea.
How do I look after it so it lasts?
Use it, and follow the maker's care notes on each piece's page. As a rule: wax for wood, a cool wash for cotton and linen, and a soft cloth for glass.
Will it arrive in time for Christmas?
For delivery in time for Christmas 2026, order ready-to-ship pieces by Monday 14 December 2026 for UK addresses, and by Friday 4 December 2026 for the United States. Made-to-order pieces take longer, so check the making time on the piece, and message the maker before you order if it is a present.
